Exotic Leather Grading at our tannery

Exotic Leather Grading at our tannery

The 3 Grades Explained

GRADE 1: Investment-Quality (Premium Pricing)

What It Is:
The top 10-15% of skins that meet strict luxury standards. These are the skins used by high-end brands for $5,000+ handbags and bespoke goods.

Visual Characteristics:

  • Symmetrical belly scales with consistent size and shape
  • Minimal to zero scarring, cuts, or blemishes
  • Uniform color base (no discoloration or fading)
  • Full belly width with premium flank sections
  • Smooth texture with no rough patches

Best For:

  • High-end handbags, wallets, and accessories
  • Bespoke commissions where perfection is expected
  • Pieces intended for resale or investment value
  • Artisans building a luxury portfolio

Pricing:Ā $1,200-$2,800 depending on species and size

GRADE 2: Professional-Quality (Mid-Range Pricing)

What It Is:
The middle 60-70% of skins with minor imperfections that don't affect durability or overall appearance. These are workable skins for skilled artisans.

Visual Characteristics:

  • Slight scale asymmetry (barely noticeable in finished goods)
  • 1-3 small scars or healed cuts (can be worked around)
  • Minor color variation (evens out with dyeing/finishing)
  • Good belly width with usable flank sections
  • Occasional rough texture in non-critical areas

Best For:

  • Mid-range handbags, belts, and small leather goods
  • Practice pieces for artisans refining techniques
  • Projects where you can cut around imperfections
  • Budget-conscious designers who prioritize value

Pricing:Ā $600-$1,400 depending on species and size
Savings:Ā 30-50% vs Grade 1

GRADE 3: Utility-Quality (Budget Pricing)

What It Is:
The remaining 15-25% of skins with visible flaws. Still genuine exotic leather, but requires strategic cutting and design adjustments.

Visual Characteristics:

  • Noticeable scale irregularities or missing scales
  • Multiple scars, cuts, or healed wounds
  • Color inconsistencies or fading
  • Narrower belly width or compromised flank sections
  • Rough texture in multiple areas

Best For:

  • Small accessories (cardholders, keychains, watch straps)
  • Testing new techniques without risking premium skins
  • Projects where you're cutting small pieces (scars can be avoided)
  • Budget-limited artisans learning the craft

Pricing:Ā $300-$800 depending on species and size
Savings:Ā 60-75% vs Grade 1

Why We Show You the Difference

Most suppliers use vague terms like "premium quality" or "select grade" without showing actual photos. Here's why we're different:

1. Photo Accuracy
Every product listing includes close-up photos of the actual skin you're buying—not stock images. You see the exact scales, scars, and color.

2. Honest Grading
We don't inflate grades to justify pricing. A Grade 2 skin is labeled Grade 2, even if it means a lower sale price.

3. Return Policy
If the skin you receive doesn't match the grade we promised, we'll refund or replace it—no questions asked.

4. Education Over Sales
We'd rather you buy the right grade for your project than oversell you on Grade 1 when Grade 2 would work perfectly.

How to Choose the Right Grade

Ask Yourself:

  1. What's the final product?Ā (High-end handbag = Grade 1; belt = Grade 2; keychain = Grade 3)
  2. Who's the client?Ā (Luxury buyer = Grade 1; mid-market = Grade 2; personal use = Grade 3)
  3. What's your skill level?Ā (Beginner = Grade 3 for practice; expert = Grade 1 for showpieces)
  4. What's your budget?Ā (Grade 2 offers the best value-to-quality ratio)

Still Unsure?Ā Contact us with your project details, and we'll recommend the right grade.
